A 24-year-old driver suffered life-threatening injuries following a serious crash near Lake Ridge Road and Highway 407 in Whitby, according to Durham Regional Police.
The Whitby head-on collision happened at approximately 2:15 p.m. on Friday, July 17, 2026. Officers from Central West Division responded after receiving reports of a major traffic incident involving several vehicles. Police said roads in the area remained closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene and collected evidence.
Whitby Head-On Collision Under Investigation
According to the preliminary police investigation, a Hyundai SUV was travelling south on Lake Ridge Road near Highway 407. At the same time, a Mitsubishi SUV was exiting the Highway 407 off-ramp.
Police said the Mitsubishi appeared to enter the intersection, prompting the Hyundai driver to move out of the southbound lane. The Hyundai then collided head-on with a Dodge minivan travelling north on Lake Ridge Road. The exact circumstances leading to the crash remain under investigation, and police have not announced any charges.
The 24-year-old driver of the Hyundai sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre. Police did not provide a further update on the driver’s medical condition in their initial release.
A 77-year-old passenger travelling in the Dodge minivan suffered critical but non-life-threatening injuries. That person was also taken to a Toronto-area trauma centre for treatment.
The 69-year-old driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Members of the Durham Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit attended the scene. Investigators closed roads in the area for several hours to document vehicle positions, examine physical evidence and reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the impact.
Police Seek Dashcam and Surveillance Footage
Durham police are asking anyone who witnessed the Whitby head-on collision or travelled through the Lake Ridge Road and Highway 407 area around the time of the crash to review any available footage.
Drivers may have relevant video from dashboard cameras, while nearby businesses or properties could have surveillance recordings that captured the vehicles before or during the collision. Police are also requesting cellphone footage or other information that may help investigators establish what happened.
