Whitby Dundas Street East transitional housing will significantly expand after a $53-million funding announcement that will increase total bed capacity to 149 for people experiencing homelessness.
The expansion at 1635 Dundas Street East in Whitby will add 104 new transitional and supportive housing beds, alongside upgrades to the 45 existing emergency shelter beds that have been operating since March 2024.
The Whitby Dundas Street East transitional housing project is funded through a partnership between the federal government, contributing $40 million, and the Region of Durham, which is providing $13.7 million.
Phase 2 of the development will also introduce an on-site medical clinic, palliative care for homeless seniors, an addictions recovery centre, and expanded administrative and support spaces.
Officials say the Whitby Dundas Street East transitional housing expansion will create sustainable pathways from emergency shelter to long-term independence while improving health outcomes and quality of life for vulnerable residents.
