Vehicle recalls affect Buick, Chevrolet, Lucid and Tesla

Drivers in Durham Region are being encouraged to check their vehicles after Transport Canada issued several new safety recalls involving select Buick, Chevrolet, Lucid and Tesla models sold in Canada.

The latest Durham vehicle recalls are part of nationwide notices reported between Aug. 22 and Aug. 28 and involve problems ranging from a potential fire hazard to faulty rear-view cameras and headlights that may be too bright.

Together, the recalls affect thousands of vehicles across Canada, although only certain vehicles within the listed model years are included.

Lucid Air recall involves potential fire risk

Lucid Motors has recalled certain 2022 through 2026 Air electric cars because of a problem involving exterior-lighting circuits.

Transport Canada says the circuits may not have proper protection, which could cause wiring and other components to overheat and melt.

The problem could cause exterior lights to stop working and, in some circumstances, create a risk of fire.

The Canadian recall affects approximately 128 vehicles.

Lucid is advising affected owners to park outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the necessary corrective action has been completed.

The company has distributed an over-the-air software update to affected vehicles.

Owners who have not accepted the update are being encouraged to install it. Transport Canada says no further action is required for vehicles already operating software version 2.10.0 or later.

Nearly 31,000 Buick and Chevrolet SUVs recalled

General Motors has issued a considerably larger recall involving nearly 31,000 Buick and Chevrolet vehicles in Canada.

Affected models include:

  • 2024 and 2025 Buick Encore GX
  • 2024 and 2025 Buick Envista
  • 2024 and 2025 Chevrolet Trailblazer
  • 2025 Chevrolet Trax

The recall only applies to certain vehicles equipped with a standard rear-view camera.

Transport Canada says moisture could enter the camera and cause the rear-view image to display incorrectly or disappear completely.

A malfunctioning rear-view camera could reduce a driver’s ability to see behind the vehicle while reversing and increase the risk of a collision.

General Motors will contact affected owners by mail and advise them to visit a dealership.

Dealers will inspect the rear-view camera and replace it when necessary.

Tesla headlights may be too bright

Another recall affects certain Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles.

The affected vehicles include Model 3 cars from the 2018 through 2022 model years and Model Y SUVs from 2020 through 2023.

Nearly 400 vehicles are included in the Canadian recall.

Transport Canada says the low-beam headlights on certain vehicles may be brighter than the maximum permitted under Canadian regulations.

Overly bright headlights could create glare for approaching motorists or reduce visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Tesla is expected to contact affected owners by email.

Transport Canada said the corrective action for this recall was still being developed when the notice was last updated Aug. 25.

Durham drivers should check recall status

The listed model years do not necessarily mean every vehicle from that year is affected.

Vehicle recalls normally apply to specific production groups, equipment configurations or identification numbers.

Durham drivers who own one of the affected models should therefore check their vehicle’s recall status through Transport Canada or the manufacturer rather than assuming their vehicle is included.

Owners who receive an official recall notice should follow the manufacturer’s instructions and arrange repairs or software updates as required.

The latest Durham vehicle recalls highlight different safety concerns, but Transport Canada’s advice varies depending on the manufacturer and defect.

For Lucid Air owners in particular, the agency recommends following the temporary outdoor-parking precaution until the required software update has been completed.
