Three hockey players who began their careers with the Ajax-Pickering Raiders represented their teams on the international stage at the 2025 Spengler Cup in Davos, Switzerland.
Drake Caggiula and Andy Andreoff suited up for Team Canada, while Devon Shore competed for Sparta Prague during the historic holiday tournament. All three players developed their skills in minor hockey under longtime coach Sal Caggiula before moving on to professional careers.
Caggiula said one of the highlights of the experience was the atmosphere both inside and outside the arena, as well as the pride of once again wearing a Team Canada jersey.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve had the chance to wear it,” he said. “I’m very proud to have had that opportunity again, especially with my family there.”
After finishing his season with Lausanne HC in Switzerland’s National League shortly before the tournament, Caggiula said maintaining routines helped him stay prepared. Spending time with his children also allowed him to reset mentally before competition.
His advice to aspiring players is to always keep improving. “Never be satisfied with where you are as a player or a person. There’s always something to work on, in hockey and in life,” he said.
Shore said being able to bring his family to Switzerland made the experience even more meaningful.
“We explored the Swiss Alps on an off day and made memories we’ll have for life,” he said.
Having watched the Spengler Cup growing up, Shore said he focused on enjoying every moment while preparing for the larger ice surface and fast-paced international play.
Andreoff also praised the level of competition and the opportunity to share the experience with his family.
“It was an amazing experience I’ll never forget,” he said, adding that mental preparation was just as important as physical training. “I tried to stay confident, trust my preparation, and stay focused on the next shift.”
All three players credited hard work, discipline, and a love for the game as key factors in reaching the professional and international level, offering inspiration to young hockey players across Durham Region.
