Residents in Durham Region are being invited to take part in an upcoming public information session regarding a major infrastructure project aimed at securing the region’s future water supply. The Region of Durham has announced plans to expand the Ajax Water Supply Plant, one of the key facilities supporting clean water distribution across the area.
With significant population growth expected over the next 25 years, regional officials say upgrades to the water system are essential to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of clean drinking water. The planned expansion of the Ajax facility marks an important first step in addressing increasing demand across communities such as Ajax, Pickering, Whitby and Oshawa.
To keep residents informed and involved, Durham Region is hosting a Public Information Centre on March 24 as part of the environmental assessment process. The session will provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the project, review current findings and share feedback with the project team.
The open house will be held at the Ajax Public Library (Rotary Room) on Harwood Avenue from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The event will follow a drop-in format, allowing attendees to explore display materials, speak directly with experts and gain a better understanding of the proposed expansion.
Officials say the environmental assessment will examine the region’s future water needs and explore different options for upgrading and expanding the existing facility. This includes evaluating the current condition of the plant, identifying necessary improvements and determining the most effective long-term solution.
The project is still in its early stages, with detailed design work expected to be completed within the next few years. Construction is currently anticipated to begin around 2031, reflecting the scale and complexity of the infrastructure upgrade.
Durham Region is encouraging residents to participate in the consultation process, emphasizing that public input plays a key role in shaping large-scale projects like this. Feedback gathered during the open house will help guide decisions as the project moves forward.
As the population continues to grow, investments in essential infrastructure such as water supply systems are becoming increasingly important. Projects like the Ajax Water Supply Plant expansion aim to ensure that Durham Region remains well-equipped to support its communities both now and in the future.
Residents who are unable to attend the session in person can also access more information about the project through the Region of Durham’s official website.
