The Ontario government has announced funding for a new primary care clinic Oshawa, developed in partnership with Queen’s University and Lakeridge Health, as part of a province-wide effort to improve access to primary care.
The clinic will serve as a teaching facility, training family medicine residents alongside nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and registered nurses. According to a provincial news release, the model will combine direct patient care with hands-on learning in team-based clinical environments.
The Oshawa clinic is one of 16 new and expanded primary care clinics receiving provincial support, with each project eligible for funding of up to $500,000. The investment is part of Ontario’s $2.1-billion plan to connect every resident to primary care services by 2029.
The clinic will be fully integrated into Lakeridge Health’s primary care strategy for Durham Region and will support the Queen’s–Lakeridge Health MD Family Medicine Program, described as the first of its kind in Canada.
The new primary care clinic in Oshawa is expected to open in 2027 or 2028, further strengthening access to community-based healthcare across Durham Region.
