A 28-year-old Brampton man is facing multiple criminal charges after a frightening incident at a local shopping centre. The Pickering mall knife threat occurred last Friday and left security guards shaken after they were threatened with a large weapon while trying to apprehend a theft suspect at a busy retail location.

The ordeal began on Friday, April 24, when emergency crews were called to a robbery at the Shoppers Drug Mart inside The Shops at Pickering City Centre, located at 1355 Kingston Road. Durham Regional Police responded to the scene at approximately 12:25 p.m. after receiving reports of a theft in progress at the pharmacy counter.

According to investigators, a man entered the store and concealed several items in a bag before attempting to leave without paying for the merchandise. When staff members noticed the theft and confronted the individual, he quickly fled the premises. Mall security personnel then intervened, attempting to follow and apprehend the suspect as he made his way through the busy shopping centre during peak midday hours.

The situation escalated dramatically when the man turned on security staff, brandishing a large knife and threatening them directly. This Pickering mall knife threat created significant panic among shoppers in the area, though fortunately no physical injuries were reported during the confrontation between the suspect and the security personnel who were bravely attempting to detain him.

Durham Regional Police officers arrived shortly after the initial emergency call and located the suspect nearby in the surrounding area. He was taken into custody without further incident or resistance, bringing a swift end to a potentially dangerous situation that had unfolded in one of Pickering’s most popular retail destinations on a busy Friday afternoon.

Jarmanjit Singh, 28, of Brampton has been formally charged with possessing a dangerous weapon, two counts of theft under five thousand dollars, two counts of possessing property obtained by crime under five thousand dollars, and breach of probation. He was held for a bail hearing following his arrest and all charges against him remain before the courts.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about retail crime and safety at shopping centres across the Durham Region. The Shops at Pickering City Centre is one of the largest malls in the area and attracts thousands of visitors daily, making incidents like this particularly alarming for local residents and business owners who frequent the establishment regularly throughout the week.

Durham Regional Police are continuing their active investigation into the Pickering mall knife threat and are asking anyone with information to come forward. Investigators are particularly interested in anyone who may have cell phone video, dash cam footage, or surveillance recordings from the area at the time of the incident that could assist with their ongoing investigation and help build a stronger case for prosecution.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact Constable Maravilla of the West Division Community Resource Unit at 1-888-579-1520 extension 1905. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at durhamcrimestoppers.ca. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
