Diwali falls on November 8 this year, and Ajax Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) is reminding residents how to handle fireworks safely during the festivities. In recognition of Diwali, fireworks are permitted in Ajax on November 7, 8 and 9.

Fireworks may only be discharged between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m., and are not permitted in a public park or on any public street or roadway at any time. Residents who choose to set off fireworks must follow the Town’s Fireworks By-law.

“Fireworks are extremely dangerous and should be left to trained professionals. This recommendation is made to minimize the risk of fire and burn injuries that can result from the misuse of fireworks.” — Tania Pannunzio, Public Educator, Ajax Fire and Emergency Services

AFES safety guidance includes storing fireworks in a cool, dry, ventilated place out of reach of children; supervising anyone under 18 around fireworks; getting the property owner’s consent; choosing a wide, clear space away from overhead obstacles; and not discharging fireworks in windy conditions. Residents should read the packaging instructions, use a good firing base such as a pail, box or wheelbarrow filled with sand, set fireworks at a 10-degree angle pointing away from spectators, never light a firework in hand, and light the fuse at its tip.

Water and a portable fire extinguisher should be kept nearby. Used fireworks and debris should be soaked in a pail of water. A firework that does not go off should never be re-lit or fixed; wait at least 30 minutes before approaching it. Sparklers burn extremely hot and should be kept away from children and soaked in water immediately after burnout. For burns, run cool water over the affected area for three to five minutes and seek medical attention if needed.
