A petition seeking the return of the Petticoat Creek pool in Pickering has passed 1,300 signatures, renewing public discussion about the permanently closed aquatic facility.

The online campaign was created August 9 by a local resident identified as Francine Mc. It asks decision-makers to repair, restore or replace the former pool so the site can again offer public swimming.

Petition revives debate over Pickering pool

The petition describes the pool as a longtime community gathering place and argues that its loss has left fewer affordable outdoor recreation options for families. Change.org showed 1,331 verified signatures when checked on September 9, including 91 added during the preceding week.

The campaign does not identify an approved project, funding commitment or reopening date. Its requested outcome also conflicts with the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority’s current designation of the aquatic facility as permanently closed.

Petticoat Creek Conservation Park is located in Pickering, but the City of Pickering does not own or operate it. The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority owns the park and is responsible for its facilities.

Why the aquatic facility closed

TRCA says a 2020 expert assessment found major infrastructure and equipment problems and determined that the 49-year-old facility had reached the end of its serviceable life. The authority concluded that continued repairs were not a sustainable way to operate the pool.

Rather than promising to restore the old pool, TRCA says it is pursuing grants and partnerships for a new leisure amenity compatible with the site. One option it has identified is a themed splash pad with a longer operating season.

Pickering has said it understands the pool’s importance to residents and has discussed potential park investments with TRCA over several years. Ideas have included a replacement pool, splash pad, improved trails and picnic facilities, but no funded construction plan has been announced.

The broader park remains open for trails, picnics and other outdoor activities according to its seasonal schedule. The petition represents community advocacy rather than a municipal or TRCA decision.
