A routine noise complaint in Oshawa led to serious drug charges after Durham Regional Police discovered nearly 50 grams of suspected cocaine during a late-night traffic stop in the city’s east end over the weekend.

Officers with the East Division initiated the traffic stop just after midnight on Saturday in the area of King Street and Eastlawn Street after observing a vehicle producing excessive noise. What initially appeared to be a straightforward noise violation quickly escalated when officers noticed open liquor containers inside the vehicle during their interaction with the driver.

A subsequent search of the car revealed more than 48 grams of suspected cocaine, leading to the immediate, uneventful arrest of the driver at the scene. Police say the individual was taken into custody without incident and transported to the station for processing and formal charging.

Shemar Marvin Horsford, 28, of Picton, Ontario, has been formally charged with trafficking in cocaine, driving with liquor readily available, and producing excessive noise under the Highway Traffic Act. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.

The intersection of King Street and Eastlawn Street is located in a quiet, well-established residential neighbourhood in east Oshawa, where noise complaints are not uncommon during the warmer summer months when residents spend more time outdoors. The incident highlights how routine police interactions can sometimes uncover more serious criminal activity within Durham Region communities.

The seizure of more than 48 grams of cocaine represents a significant quantity for a single traffic stop. The amount far exceeds what would typically be associated with personal use and instead points to potential distribution activity, which is why police elected to lay trafficking charges rather than simple possession.

Cocaine trafficking charges in Ontario carry severe legal consequences, including potential imprisonment upon conviction. The federal Controlled Drugs and Substances Act provides for substantial penalties for trafficking offences, with sentences varying significantly based on the quantity involved and any other relevant aggravating factors.

This arrest is part of a broader pattern of drug enforcement activity across Durham Region in recent months. Durham Regional Police have been actively targeting the distribution of controlled substances across Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, and surrounding communities as part of their ongoing, coordinated efforts to disrupt local drug supply chains.

Police have noted that traffic stops remain one of the most effective tools for intercepting illegal substances, as drivers transporting drugs can draw attention to themselves through unrelated infractions such as excessive noise, speeding, or equipment violations.

Durham Regional Police East Division is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest and whether the seized cocaine may be connected to broader distribution networks operating in the greater Durham region.

Anyone with information about this incident or any related drug activity in the Oshawa area is encouraged to contact Constable Cormier of East Division at 1-888-579-1520 extension 1601. Information can also be reported anonymously through Durham Region Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online, where tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to 2,000 dollars.
