An Oshawa cannabis robbery led to a police tactical response after a man allegedly stole a cash register at knifepoint from a cannabis store in south Oshawa last week.
Durham Regional Police say officers responded to a robbery call at True North Cannabis on Cedar Street just before noon on January 15. Investigators allege a man entered the store, threatened two employees with a knife, and took a cash register before fleeing the scene.
Police later tracked the suspect to a nearby residence. After the individual refused to surrender, the Tactical Support Unit was called in. Following brief negotiations, officers took the suspect into custody without incident.
No employees were physically injured during the robbery.
Thomas Stavrou, 31, of Oshawa, is charged with robbery, two weapons offences, two counts of theft, disguise with intent, possession of stolen property, and failure to comply with a release order.
Anyone with cellphone, dashcam, or surveillance footage related to the incident is asked to contact the Durham Regional Police Robbery Crime Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5355.
