A 56-year-old man faces charges after an Oshawa bank robbery in which an employee was threatened and about $4,000 was handed over, Durham police say.
Officers responded at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 14, to the CIBC branch at 2 Simcoe Street South in downtown Oshawa.
Employee threatened during cash demand
According to the Durham Regional Police Service, a man approached a female employee and claimed to have a firearm while demanding cash. The employee complied and gave him an unknown amount of Canadian currency that police believe was approximately $4,000.
The man left, but officers found him later and arrested him without incident. Police reported no injuries and did not say that a firearm was recovered.
A 56-year-old man of no fixed address is charged with robbery, failing to comply with a probation order and possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000. He was held for a bail hearing.
The charges are allegations that have not been proven in court. A bail hearing is not a finding of guilt.
Police continue to seek information
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the Oshawa bank robbery to contact the DRPS Auto Robbery Crime Unit. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
Police have not released more information about how the accused was located, whether money was recovered or whether a weapon was found.
