A new urgent care and family medicine clinic in downtown Oshawa is expected to open later in 2026, offering additional healthcare services to residents and providing an opportunity for people without a family doctor to join a wait-list.

The new clinic will be operated by the team behind Priority Health — Family Medicine and Urgent Care, a medical practice that opened its first location in Pickering two years ago.

That clinic, located at the Jerry Coughlan Health and Wellness Centre, has grown rapidly and now includes 12 physicians serving patients in the community.

Clinic owners have now purchased a building at 96 King Street East in Oshawa, where they plan to develop a second location offering similar services.

The building sits across from the former Oshawa Clinic location, which relocated to Whitby in 2024.

Dr. Chris Westbrook, a family doctor and co-owner of the practice, said the new Oshawa clinic will follow a similar model to the existing Pickering facility.

“We are essentially trying to build out a carbon copy of what’s in our Pickering location to our Oshawa location,” Westbrook explained.

The 8,300-square-foot building will house two types of medical services.

The main floor will operate as an urgent care clinic, providing treatment for immediate but non-life-threatening medical issues. The second floor will focus on family medicine, allowing residents to register with a family doctor for ongoing care.

The clinic plans to start with approximately eight family physicians, with additional doctors potentially joining the practice in the future.

According to Dr. Westbrook, recruiting new doctors often depends on demonstrating strong demand from patients.

He noted that about one in five people currently do not have a family doctor, making the new clinic an important addition to healthcare services in Durham Region.

To help prepare for the opening, the clinic has begun accepting names for a patient wait-list.

Westbrook explained that having a large list of interested patients can help attract more physicians to join the clinic and expand the number of available appointments.

Despite the high demand for family doctors, organizers say patients who join the wait-list may not have to wait too long.

“We’re optimistically hoping for the summer,” Westbrook said. “Summer or fall would be a realistic timeline.”

The new Oshawa clinic will offer several services already available at the Pickering location.

These services include acute pain management, on-site X-rays, casting for fractures, suturing for wound care and treatment of allergic reactions.

The clinic also works with several specialists, including a surgeon who performs minor procedures once a week, along with access to a dermatologist and cardiologist.

Residents who wish to register for the new clinic can join the wait-list online as the facility prepares to open later this year.
