A man has been found guilty of second-degree murder in a Toronto shooting that killed a bystander, highlighting ongoing concerns around supervised consumption sites.
Damian Hudson was convicted after a stray bullet struck and killed Karolina Huebner-Makurat, a 44-year-old mother of two, near the South Riverdale Community Health Centre in Leslieville in 2023. Police said the shooting occurred during a confrontation between three alleged drug dealers outside the site.
The jury delivered the verdict on Friday evening. A second-degree murder conviction carries an automatic life sentence, with no possibility of parole for 10 to 25 years.
Huebner-Makurat’s family expressed gratitude to the police, Crown attorneys, and jury members for their work in bringing justice. “Our family, friends, loved ones, local community and neighbours will remember Caroline forever as we move forward with our lives,” they said in a statement.
In response to the incident, the Ontario government reviewed 17 supervised consumption sites across the province and passed legislation banning such sites within 200 metres of schools or daycares. A number of Toronto sites challenged the law in court, receiving injunctions that allowed them to remain open temporarily. However, limited government funding ultimately led most sites to close or transition to the province’s new abstinence-based model.
The conviction underscores the tragic consequences of urban gun violence and the ongoing debates surrounding supervised consumption facilities in Ontario.
