In the latest Durham police news, the Durham Regional Police Association (DRPA) criticized certain members of the legal community for their conduct in the ongoing Sudine Riley case.

A statement from the DRPA, released on January 30, emphasized the association’s commitment to transparency and independent review. The DRPA proactively requested that the matter be referred to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), though the SIU declined to investigate. The association stated its members are ready to face an objective external review.

Andrew Tummonds, DRPA president, condemned “opportunistic conduct” by select criminal defense lawyers. “It is both hypocritical and professionally distasteful to see individuals abandon the principle of presumption of innocence for political or personal gain,” he said.

“These lawyers have bypassed facts in favor of a media campaign, using the incident for self-marketing while disparaging officers protected by the very individuals they attack,” Tummonds added.

The DRPA affirmed its support for its officers, stating that they will not tolerate members being tried in the court of public opinion and will continue to uphold integrity during the investigation. This statement is a key update in Durham police news, highlighting tensions between law enforcement and some members of the legal community.
