Lottery enthusiasts in the Durham Region are facing a significant transition as the nation’s most popular game undergoes its biggest overhaul since 2009. Starting with the April 14, 2026, draw, the Lotto Max odds will officially change, accompanied by a price increase and a higher jackpot cap. While the current Tuesday draw features a massive $75 million prize, it serves as one of the final opportunities for players in Oshawa and Whitby to play under the long-standing $5 format.

The New Price of Dreaming Big

For the first time in nearly two decades, the cost of a single play is rising. Residents across the Durham Region will now pay $6 per play, up from the traditional $5. To offset this price hike, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) is increasing the number of lines provided. Instead of the current three lines of seven numbers, players will receive four lines. However, this comes with a caveat: the pool of numbers is expanding from 1-50 to 1-52, which directly impacts the Lotto Max odds for the top prize.

Understanding the Lotto Max Odds Shift

The restructuring creates a “good news, bad news” scenario for mathematicians and casual players alike. The Lotto Max odds of hitting the main jackpot are getting slightly tougher. Currently, the chance of winning the jackpot is approximately 1 in 33.2 million per play; under the new system, those odds lengthen to roughly 1 in 33.4 million.

Conversely, because players are receiving an extra line of numbers, the statistical probability of winning any prize (such as a free play or small cash amount) actually improves. The overall odds of winning any prize will move from 1 in 7 to a more favorable 1 in 5.8 per play.

Record-Breaking Jackpots and New Prizes

One of the most exciting changes for residents in Ajax and Pickering is the new jackpot cap. The maximum prize is jumping from $80 million to a staggering $90 million—a new record for Canadian lotteries. Additionally, the OLG is introducing “Maxplus” prizes. These are fixed $100,000 rewards that scale with the jackpot. For example, if the jackpot hits $90 million, there could be up to 90 additional $100,000 prizes drawn, appearing alongside the established $1 million Maxmillions.

Final Draws Under Old Rules

Commuters and locals picking up tickets at convenience stores in Clarington or Uxbridge should note that the April 7 and April 10 draws are the final “classic” games. Any tickets purchased after Friday’s draw will automatically fall under the new $6 rules. As the $75 million Tuesday jackpot looms, many in the Durham Region are eager to see if one final winner can be crowned before the Lotto Max odds enter this new era.
