Durham Residential Break-Ins Linked to Fake Landscapers

Durham residential break-ins may be connected to an organized group whose members pose as landscapers or tradespeople while targeting homes in Clarington, Pickering and Whitby, police warn.

Durham Regional Police issued the public-safety notice after investigators identified a pattern of recent break-and-enters across the three municipalities.

Police say the suspects frequently use parks, trails and greenspaces to approach residential properties from behind. Once in the backyard, they allegedly force their way into homes through rear doors or windows.

Suspects Allegedly Use Ladders and Work Tools

During some Durham residential break-ins, suspects reportedly shattered rear sliding-glass doors to enter homes.

In other incidents, police say ladders were used to reach second-storey windows. The suspects may carry tools, backpacks or equipment to make it appear that they are completing landscaping, repair or construction work in the neighbourhood.

Police described the suspects as men wearing medical masks, baseball hats, dark-coloured shorts, T-shirts and gloves. They were also seen carrying backpacks.

The appearance of work clothing or tools may help the suspects move through residential areas without immediately attracting attention.

Durham police previously investigated an attempted residential break-in in Pickering in which two masked suspects used a ladder to try to access the second floor of a home. Police have also investigated an organized group believed responsible for at least 20 residential break-ins in Whitby.

Police have not confirmed publicly whether those earlier cases involve the same suspects identified in the latest warning.

Residents Asked to Report Suspicious Activity

Residents are urged to remain alert when they see unfamiliar people carrying ladders, tools or backpacks near homes, parks, trails and greenspaces.

Police say particular attention should be paid to people entering backyards or walking behind residential properties when they do not appear to be working at a nearby address.

Homeowners can reduce their risk by locking doors and windows, securing ladders and outdoor tools, trimming vegetation that blocks sightlines and using exterior lighting or security cameras.

Residents should avoid confronting suspicious individuals. Anyone who sees a break-in happening or believes someone is in immediate danger should call 911.

Non-emergency information can be reported to Durham Regional Police at 1-888-579-1520. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
