With extreme cold weather alerts in effect, Durham Region warming centres are providing essential overnight shelter for residents experiencing homelessness across the region.
While public facilities such as libraries and recreation centres offer daytime warmth, overnight options remain limited. To address this need, Durham Region has made at least 171 overnight spaces available across south Durham, including cots, beds, and chairs.
During periods of extreme cold defined as temperatures below –15°C or wind chills reaching –20°C warming centres remain open throughout the day. Regionally funded emergency shelters also increase capacity by adding extra mats and cots, with motel and hotel placements used when required.
Each municipality across Durham Region offers warming spaces with specific eligibility criteria, including pet-friendly and youth-focused options. Outreach services are also available in north Durham to assist residents who cannot access shelters.
Residents are encouraged to share this information with anyone who may need support during severe winter conditions.
