Police are investigating a Durham Region bank fraud Pickering incident after scammers used stolen bank cards to withdraw more than $25,000 in Brampton and Pickering.

According to Wellington County OPP, the fraud was reported on January 5 after a victim received a phone call that appeared to be from their financial institution. Investigators say the caller used call-display spoofing to appear legitimate and falsely claimed the victim’s bank account was involved in suspicious activity.

The victim was instructed to place their physical bank cards into an envelope, which was later collected by a courier from their residence. Police allege the cards were picked up by a man described as having a medium build, black hair, and wearing gold jewelry, while driving a white Tesla SUV.

The following day, the victim’s actual bank contacted them to report unauthorized withdrawals using the stolen cards across the Greater Toronto Area, including Pickering, resulting in losses exceeding $25,000.

Police have released images of the suspect vehicle and are urging residents to remain vigilant. Anyone who receives suspicious calls claiming to be from a bank is advised to hang up immediately and verify the information by contacting their financial institution directly.

Anyone with information related to this Durham Region bank fraud Pickering case is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, with rewards of up to $2,000 available.
