Durham Education Funding Supports Growth and Care

Durham Regional Chair and CEO John Henry says recent provincial investments in post-secondary education and primary care are important steps toward supporting the region’s rapid population and economic growth. He argues that Durham needs both a skilled workforce and accessible public services if residents and businesses are to benefit from continued expansion.

Durham is one of Canada’s fastest-growing regions, with its population expected to reach approximately 1.3 million by 2051. That expansion is increasing demand for trained workers, family doctors, community services and public infrastructure.

Durham Education Funding Strengthens Local Institutions

The province announced $151.5 million for Durham College under Ontario’s new post-secondary funding model. The college operates campuses in Oshawa and Whitby and provides programs in skilled trades, health care, technology, business and other employment-focused fields.

Ontario Tech University is receiving $91.9 million through the same provincial model. The Oshawa university says the funding will help expand capacity in programs connected to regional and provincial labour-market needs while creating more opportunities for students to pursue career-focused education in high-demand sectors.

Trent University is also receiving $57.7 million over four years. Trent operates its Durham GTA campus in Oshawa, contributing to the region’s wider post-secondary network. The funding is intended to support the university’s continued growth and preparation of graduates for in-demand careers.

Together, Durham College, Ontario Tech and Trent Durham GTA educate thousands of students while supporting research, innovation and workforce development.

Henry says these institutions help prepare graduates for careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, health care, skilled trades and other fields that are important to Durham’s economy. Their partnerships with employers, hands-on learning programs and industry-related research can also help businesses recruit qualified workers locally.

For students, stronger institutions may create more opportunities to study, work and build careers without leaving Durham Region. For employers, a reliable talent pipeline can make the area more attractive for investment and expansion.

Primary Care Investment Targets Ajax and Pickering

Henry also highlighted provincial funding of nearly $3.8 million for the Durham West Network Family Health Team. The investment is intended to connect almost 10,000 residents in Ajax and Pickering with a family doctor or another primary-care provider.

The Durham West network brings together four local physician organizations serving west Durham. Team-based primary care can include family doctors, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, dietitians and other professionals working together to provide coordinated services.

The funding is significant as many Ontario residents continue to lack regular access to primary care. Connecting more people with a provider can help patients receive preventive care, manage ongoing health conditions and obtain support closer to home.

Henry says investments in education and health care are closely connected to Durham’s long-term success. Education develops workers for growing industries, while reliable health services support families and improve quality of life.

He also argues that the investments demonstrate what can be achieved when municipal leaders, the province, educational institutions, health professionals and community organizations work toward shared regional goals.

The new funding will not resolve every pressure created by rapid growth. Durham will continue to require planning and investment in transportation, housing, hospitals, emergency services and other infrastructure.

However, Durham education funding and expanded health services can provide an important foundation. Henry says continued collaboration with the province will be essential to ensuring Durham’s growth produces lasting opportunities, healthier communities and stronger services for future generations.
