On Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, Durham Regional Police Service’s Youth in Policing Initiative hosted the 2026 DRPS IMPACT Youth Forum, bringing together youth from across Durham Region for a full day of leadership development and community-focused learning.
The annual forum empowers young people to create positive change through interactive workshops rooted in the IMPACT principles Inspire, Motivate, Persevere, Act, Create, and Transcend. These hands-on sessions focus on leadership, creativity, collaboration, and meaningful action.
More than 200 youth between the ages of 14 and 24 attended this year’s event. The forum also welcomed DRPS Chief Peter Moreira, along with DRPS officers and Auxiliary officers, who helped foster an engaging and supportive environment throughout the day.
Chief Moreira opened the forum with inspiring remarks, followed by the introduction of the Quote of the Day: “Never underestimate the IMPACT you can have on others.” The message set the tone for the event, emphasizing that leadership begins with everyday choices, perseverance, and acts of kindness.
This year’s forum held special significance as the Youth in Policing Initiative marked its 20th anniversary. Since 2006, the program has provided thousands of youth with employment opportunities, mentorship, and leadership training, supporting their growth as confident community leaders.
Organizers expressed gratitude to all participants and volunteers who contributed to the success of the event, with special recognition given to the IMPACT United Team and the YIP Leadership Team for their dedication and creativity.
The DRPS Youth in Policing Initiative is now accepting applications for its 2026 Summer Initiative. More information is available at www.drps.ca/yip, by emailing youthinpolicing@drps.ca, or by following @drps_yip on social media.
