The Pickering community centre hub is set to officially open this spring, marking a major milestone for the city and the broader Durham Region. Known as the Dorsay Community & Heritage Centre, this new development represents the first major community centre built in Pickering in decades and is expected to become a central gathering space for residents of all ages.

Located on the upper grounds of Pickering Museum Village, the Pickering community centre hub combines modern infrastructure with cultural heritage, offering a unique blend of services in one integrated space. The $65 million facility brings together a museum experience, a library component, and a fully equipped community centre, creating a multi-functional destination designed to meet the evolving needs of the growing population in north Pickering.

One of the key highlights of the Pickering community centre hub is its architectural design, which reflects both modern aesthetics and the surrounding historical environment. The centre features a large banquet hall complete with a stage, making it ideal for weddings, celebrations, and corporate events. In addition, a central courtyard and landscaped garden area provide a scenic outdoor setting for gatherings and community activities.

The facility also includes a library express kiosk and a dedicated local history experience centre, allowing visitors to explore Pickering’s rich heritage while accessing modern learning resources. A gift shop and catering kitchen are also part of the development, further enhancing the centre’s functionality as a venue for both public and private events.

Accessibility has been a key priority in the design of the Pickering community centre hub, ensuring that all residents can comfortably access its services and participate in its programs. The fully accessible event spaces and amenities reflect the city’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

The new centre will replace the aging Greenwood Community Centre, which is scheduled to be demolished later this year. This transition marks a significant upgrade in infrastructure, providing residents with a more modern, efficient, and versatile facility.

In addition to serving existing residents, the Pickering community centre hub is expected to play an important role in supporting future neighbourhood developments in north Pickering. As the area continues to grow, the centre will act as a hub for social connection, cultural activities, and community programming.

The project also includes a long-term naming rights agreement with Dorsay Development Corporation, which contributed $1 million over a 15-year period. This partnership highlights the collaboration between public and private sectors in delivering community-focused infrastructure.

Overall, the opening of the Pickering community centre hub represents a major investment in the city’s future, providing a space where residents can connect, celebrate, and engage with their community for years to come.
