DCDSB cook apprenticeship exploration brought Grade 11 and 12 students to Durham College’s Whitby campus on October 27 for a day combining kitchen work with information about entering the trade.
In an October 29 account, the Durham Catholic District School Board said the students attended the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program’s Cook Information Day. The visit gave them time with college faculty and a look inside the Centre for Food’s culinary labs and facilities.
Hands-on experience in the kitchen
Students prepared salads and dressings, cooked pasta and sauces, and assembled lunches during the visit. The activities accompanied a tour rather than being described as a cooking competition or a formal qualification assessment.
The information portion covered the OYAP Cook application, placement and apprenticeship process, giving students a chance to explore the steps involved in that pathway alongside the practical activities.
The DCDSB cook apprenticeship notice does not identify participating schools, an attendance total, application deadlines or admission requirements. Families considering the programme should seek current application and placement details through their school rather than treating the visit itself as an offer of admission.
