The Clarington land purchase advances Bowmanville sports and event grounds project, marking a major step toward creating a new outdoor hub for recreation and community gatherings in Durham Region.

The Municipality of Clarington has officially acquired 20 hectares of land on Maple Grove Road, just west of the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre. The property was purchased on February 12 and will serve as the future home of a large outdoor Sports and Event Grounds in Bowmanville.

Mayor Adrian Foster described the project as an exciting opportunity for the community.

“This blank canvas could become the central heart of the community, where we host wonderful gatherings like Canada Day,” Foster said, thanking municipal staff for their efforts in moving the initiative forward.

The Clarington land purchase advances Bowmanville sports and event grounds project in response to growing demand for outdoor recreation space identified in the Parks, Recreation and Culture Master Plan (2024). The plan highlighted the need for a large parcel of land to support additional sports fields and large-scale community events, noting that no suitable space was previously available within the existing park system.

Preliminary concepts for the site include:

  • A dedicated cricket field

  • A municipally sanctioned toboggan hill

  • Multiple soccer fields

  • A 3.5-hectare outdoor gathering space for major events

  • A covered stage for concerts and live performances

  • Connected trails and on-site parking

Residents will have the opportunity to provide input on the final design and vision for the site in the coming months.

The Clarington land purchase advances Bowmanville sports and event grounds project and positions the municipality to better serve its growing population with expanded recreation and event facilities.
