Low-income residents across Durham Region will have access to important government services this spring through a series of ID and Benefits Hubs, designed to help individuals and families connect with financial supports, identification services and community resources.

The initiative, organized within Durham Region, aims to assist residents who may face barriers in accessing essential services, especially during the busy income tax season. These hubs will be set up in multiple locations, including Pickering, Ajax, Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, making it easier for residents across the region to attend.

At these hubs, residents can learn about more than 40 government benefits available in Ontario that can help increase income and improve financial stability. On-site representatives will be available to guide individuals through applications and answer questions about eligibility.

One of the key services offered includes assistance with applying for programs such as the Canada Disability Benefit and the Canadian Dental Care Plan, with support from Service Canada staff. This direct access helps reduce delays and confusion often associated with online or remote applications.

In addition to benefits support, residents will also be able to obtain or replace important government identification documents. This includes services for social insurance numbers, birth certificates and health cards, which are available free of charge for eligible low-income individuals. Other services, such as renewing photo ID or driver’s licences, will also be available, though some standard fees may apply.

The hubs will also provide opportunities for families to plan for the future. Eligible residents can receive assistance in opening a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) and applying for the Canada Learning Bond, which can provide up to $2,000 per child to support post-secondary education.

To address immediate needs, food support will also be available. Feed The Need in Durham will distribute food packages at each location, helping residents who may be facing food insecurity.

In addition, the hubs will connect residents with services offered by the Durham Region Health Department, Social Services and Durham Region Transit, along with support from various community partners. At select locations, individuals with simple tax situations and low or no income can also receive help filing their taxes, although appointments are required for this service.

The ID and Benefits Access Hubs will take place on multiple dates from April to May at public libraries and community centres across Durham Region. Officials are encouraging residents to attend and take advantage of the wide range of services available in one convenient location.

By bringing these resources directly into the community, Durham Region aims to ensure that more residents can access the support they need to improve their financial well-being and overall quality of life.
