April 2026 Weather is shaping up to be a transitional and somewhat unsettled month across southern Ontario, including communities throughout Durham Region. While spring officially settles in during April, long-range forecasts suggest residents may experience fluctuating temperatures, rounds of rain, and even the possibility of lingering snow before consistently warmer weather arrives.

According to projections from the Farmers’ Almanac, the month is expected to begin on a relatively mild and damp note. From April 1 to April 8, southern Ontario could see periods of rain accompanied by warmer temperatures compared to late March. Cities such as Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton and Niagara, along with Durham Region municipalities including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering and Clarington, may experience cloudy skies and scattered showers during this opening stretch. While daytime highs may feel spring-like at times, overnight temperatures are still expected to dip close to freezing.

From April 9 to April 15, the forecast suggests a shift toward sunnier skies. However, this brighter stretch may come with a return of colder air moving back into the region. While sunshine could make afternoons more comfortable, chilly mornings and brisk winds may remind residents that winter’s grip has not fully loosened. Wind chills could make temperatures feel several degrees cooler, especially in open areas and near the lakeshore.

The middle portion of the month — April 16 to April 25 — is projected to bring more unsettled conditions. During this period, southern Ontario may see alternating systems delivering rain showers and possibly brief periods of wet snow, particularly during overnight hours. While significant snow accumulation is not anticipated, late-season flurries are not unusual for April in Ontario. Durham Region could experience these mixed conditions, with fluctuating daytime highs and cloudy skies dominating much of the forecast window.

Toward the end of April, from April 26 to April 30, the forecast points to continued cool weather with occasional passing showers. Although there may be breaks of sunshine, temperatures are expected to remain slightly below seasonal averages. The Farmers’ Almanac predicts an average April temperature of around 5 C, approximately 1 C below normal for this time of year.

Precipitation totals for the month are estimated at about 75 millimetres, slightly above average. Northern parts of the province are expected to see wetter conditions overall, while southern Ontario — including Durham Region — may experience moderate rainfall totals with periodic dry intervals.

For residents across Durham Region, this means April 2026 may require flexibility. Commuters should prepare for wet road conditions at times, and homeowners planning early landscaping or gardening projects may want to monitor frost risks carefully. Outdoor events could also need contingency plans due to shifting weather patterns.
