Three remarkable athletes from Durham Region achieved impressive success at the 2026 Canadian National Taekwondo Championships in Halifax, February 6–8, 2026, representing Team Ontario.

Laila Farag from Whitby claimed gold, earning the title of Canadian National Champion and securing her spot on Team Canada for the third consecutive year.

Dylan Weatherdon from Bowmanville also won gold, becoming a Canadian National Champion and earning his place on Team Canada.

Matthew Cain from Courtice delivered a strong performance, winning bronze and contributing to Durham Region’s stellar results at the national level.
Earlier in the season, Laila and Dylan both captured gold at the Ontario Provincial Taekwondo Championships on October 5, 2025, cementing their status as Ontario Provincial Champions for 2025/2026.
All three athletes train under Master Ron Lemoire at Whitby Taekwondo Academy, reflecting the hard work and commitment of Durham Region’s youth athletes.
