OSHAWA (Metroland) — What started as a viral controversy quickly turned into a night of laughs for Oshawa Generals fans, who embraced the team’s now-infamous “Stink Gate” email with humour and creativity.

After the Generals sent an email to season ticket holders asking fans to “please shower before attending” games due to complaints about body odour inside the Tribute Communities Centre, the message quickly went viral across social media platforms worldwide.

Rather than taking offence, many fans showed up to Friday night’s game dressed in bathrobes and shower caps, waving signs reading “I’m with Smelly” and “Power Play? More like Shower Play.” Rubber duckies filled the arena, and the atmosphere was light-hearted and playful.

The original email also reminded fans to use hand sanitizing stations, cover coughs and sneezes, and consider staying home if feeling unwell. It specifically mentioned that those coming from the gym should shower before attending.

While the internet quickly ran with jokes about the “Dirty Shwa,” and even hockey podcast Spittin’ Chiclets weighed in, the team later issued an apology, acknowledging it had “taken a penalty” with the message and promising to “wash this one off.”

Despite some criticism, many fans supported the team’s original message. By the time the Generals faced their arch-rival Peterborough Petes, the controversy had turned into entertainment.

Season ticket holder Joanne McKnight-Antoniak said the fans “definitely didn’t disappoint,” praising the creative outfits and signs.

On the ice, the Generals delivered as well, defeating Peterborough 8–4 after jumping out to a commanding lead.

With the annual Family Day matinee game approaching, Oshawa fans proved they can take a joke — and turn it into a memorable night at the rink.
