Frigid Weekend Ahead: Southern Ontario Wind Chills Could Feel as Cold as −18 C

Southern Ontario is heading into the first weekend of 2026 under bitterly cold conditions, with freezing temperatures, wind chills and light snowfall in the forecast.

After a frigid New Year’s Eve, the cold snap is expected to persist through the weekend, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Friday night will be partly cloudy, with temperatures dropping to around −11 C. Wind chill values will make it feel closer to −16 C overnight across areas including Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Hamilton, Burlington and Oakville. In Durham Region, wind chills could dip further, making it feel as cold as −18 C.

On Saturday, skies will remain mainly cloudy with daytime highs near −4 C. Light snow is expected to develop in the afternoon, with up to three centimetres possible by the evening in parts of the Greater Toronto Area. Overnight lows are forecast to reach −9 C, with wind chills ranging from −16 C in the morning to −9 C by evening.

Conditions improve slightly on Sunday, with sunny skies and a daytime high around −2 C. Temperatures will fall again overnight to near −13 C, with wind chill values making it feel closer to −14 C.

Looking ahead, additional snow is forecast for Monday, followed by gradually moderating temperatures as southern Ontario moves into midweek.
