A Pickering road worker has died after a reversing dump truck struck him during asphalt repairs on Peter Matthews Drive, Durham Regional Police said in a November 3 release.
The 31-year-old man was taken to a local-area hospital, where he died from his injuries. Police have not identified him in the release.
Collision happened during asphalt repairs
West Division officers responded at approximately 2:40 p.m. on Monday, November 2, to a collision involving a pedestrian near Peter Matthews Drive and Alexander Knox Drive.
According to police, a dump truck was reversing southbound while asphalt repair work was taking place when it struck the worker. The truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
Members of the Durham police Collision Investigation Unit attended. Officials from the Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Labour also came to the scene, police said. Roads in the area were closed for several hours while evidence was collected.
Police seek video and witnesses
Investigators are asking anyone with cellphone, dashcam or surveillance footage, or other information about the collision, to contact Detective Constable Kollaard of the Collision Investigation Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5267.
The November 3 announcement confirms a fatality and the circumstances involving the Pickering road worker. It is a substantial development beyond the earlier police traffic notice, which announced a collision-related closure without describing injuries or the vehicles involved.
The release does not announce charges or provide a finding about responsibility for the collision. This report does not infer either. Its featured image is an original editorial illustration, not a photograph of the worker, vehicle or incident location.
