Durham Election Sign Removal Deadlines Differ by Town

Durham election sign removal rules are now taking effect after the October 26 municipal vote, but candidates should check their own municipality rather than assume one deadline applies across the region.

Scugog’s election sign bylaw requires displayed signs to be removed within 72 hours after midnight on voting day. Following Monday’s election, that window runs to the end of Thursday, October 29.

Whitby’s official election-sign page gives Monday, November 2, as the final day to remove all signs for the 2026 election. The town identifies September 14 as the earliest display date and November 2 as the removal deadline.

Responsibilities differ from recycling arrangements

In Scugog, section 9 of the bylaw makes the owner or occupant responsible for ensuring signs on private property come down within the required period. The township may remove signs displayed in violation of the bylaw without notice or compensation.

The bylaw also provides for storage of removed signs and later disposal of signs that remain unclaimed. Candidates should consult the full document rather than treat removal by the township as a substitute for arranging their own collection.

Whitby says its enforcement staff patrol signs on town and regional roads. Signs that breach the town’s election-sign rules may be removed immediately without notice.

Check the municipality that governs the sign

Durham Radio News reported the differing local removal deadlines on October 29. The confirmed Scugog and Whitby rules illustrate why a regional reminder is not a single region-wide deadline.

Durham election sign removal is separate from the Region’s previously announced recycling programme. A recycling option does not extend the time a sign may remain displayed. Candidates with signs elsewhere in Durham should consult that municipality’s current rules before relying on another town’s dates.
