An Ajax vehicle fraud investigation has led to charges against a 52-year-old Toronto man after ServiceOntario employees questioned documents presented to transfer ownership of a minivan, Durham Regional Police said Tuesday.
Officers responded to a fraud-in-progress call on October 20. Police allege the suspect submitted documents to transfer a victim’s 2019 Dodge Caravan, but staff noticed the ownership form did not carry the registered owner’s signature.
According to investigators, the man left the office and went to his vehicle alone. He returned shortly afterward with the same paperwork, now bearing a signature, and presented it again. An employee contacted police.
Police said staff reported that the accused had visited the location on several previous occasions and was believed to have registered vehicles with fraudulent documents. Those reports remain allegations; the release does not establish how many other transactions may be involved.
Ion Boana, 52, of Toronto, is charged with one count each of fraud over $5,000, uttering a forged document and altering a document to defraud. He was released on an undertaking with conditions. The charges have not been proven in court.
Investigators believe there may be other victims. Anyone with information about the Ajax vehicle fraud case can contact Detective Constable Taylor of the Financial Crimes Unit at 1-888-579-1520, extension 5283.
The October 27 release does not identify the ServiceOntario address or announce a court date.
