The Press Oshawa is now operating at 34 King Street East, bringing records, coffee and a lounge back to the downtown space formerly occupied by Kops Records.

The opening marks a concrete change from the earlier plan for the business. In a new October 24 report, Oshawa This Week interviewed Will McGuirk and Domenic Albis inside the premises and documented the shop and its seating area.

McGuirk previously managed the Oshawa Kops location. Albis, the manager of Avanti Trattoria, is leasing the King Street East space, while McGuirk directs its record selection, music programming and atmosphere.

A different use for a familiar address

The partners developed the venture through conversations around the closing of Kops. The result combines retail with somewhere to spend time, rather than simply replacing the former record racks.

Customers can browse local and international recordings, buy coffee supplied by Bowmanville roaster Silver Scooter, or sit in the lounge with a book and conversation. McGuirk told the newspaper the seating area is already being used.

The location is across from the Biltmore Theatre. Its opening adds another gathering space to a downtown where local music, hospitality and small businesses frequently overlap.

Oshawa music history shapes the interior

Photographs, concert posters and pieces connected to former local venues are part of the decor. The newspaper documented items associated with Illusions and the Purple Onion, alongside work by local artist Miles Tsang.

McGuirk wants the displays to change over time, giving artists opportunities to contribute music-related work. That ambition builds on his long involvement with the city’s performers and venues, but it is a continuing plan rather than a completed exhibition schedule.

A DJ booth is also part of the space. McGuirk described plans for local DJ performances and livestreams, vendor pop-ups, visiting-band events and informal afternoon music sessions. No dates for those activities were established in the report, so they should not be read as a current events calendar.

Opening follows the earlier proposal

All About Durham previously reported that the partners were preparing The Press Oshawa at the former Kops address. At that stage, an opening date had not been confirmed. The new on-site interviews and photographs establish that the business has moved beyond that proposal and is open.

McGuirk also described the investment as an expression of confidence in the downtown community. His comments about how the area is perceived are his assessment, not an independent finding about neighbourhood safety or business conditions.

The available report does not establish regular operating hours or a complete entertainment programme. This article reports the opening, without adding unverified visitor arrangements.
