The Port Perry Agricultural Society is asking for a public explanation after saying the Scugog fairgrounds forum discussion was restricted at a September mayoral event.
The society says candidates at the North Durham Chamber of Commerce’s September 16 mayoral forum and meet-the-candidates event were told they could not raise the future of the Port Perry Fairgrounds.
According to a statement attributed to the society, attendees were not permitted to ask questions about the site and several people were told the subject could not be discussed. The chamber has not been quoted in the available reports responding to those claims.
Society seeks explanation of topic selection
Society president Paul Puckrin said the alleged restrictions prevented residents from hearing candidates’ positions on an issue affecting taxpayers and the community. The group wants the chamber to explain how discussion topics were selected.
The society argues that the restriction was inconsistent with the event listing, which invited residents to ask questions that mattered to their families. It is also asking organizers of future forums to permit respectful questions about the property.
Fairgrounds future remains unresolved
The Port Perry Agricultural Society is seeking renewal of its management role at the fairgrounds. At the same time, the Township of Scugog has been undertaking a third-party visioning exercise that could lead to development on part of the site.
That broader process has made the future of the property an election issue. The society says voters should be able to hear how candidates would approach management, possible development and continued community use.
The available accounts are based on the agricultural society’s statement and reports by Durham Post and Daily Durham. They do not establish the chamber’s reasons or confirm its response. This article therefore attributes the claims rather than presenting them as independently proven facts.
The October 26 municipal election will determine Scugog’s next council. The Scugog fairgrounds forum dispute is a new development in an older debate about the property’s future.
