The Ajax Elevate Girls campaign will run from October 5 to 11, highlighting girls and women in sport while addressing barriers to participation.
The week leads into International Day of the Girl on October 11 and includes online videos, recreation-centre activities and chances to win sports kits.
Local Olympian featured in campaign
Videos released through the town’s social media channels will share perspectives on female participation in sport. The final video on October 11 will feature Ajax Olympic athlete Sade McCreath.
Residents can enter an online contest from October 5 to 11 for a chance to win one of three Elevate Girls branded sports kits. The town says all entrants are welcome.
Activities planned at recreation centres
Information tables, balloons, stickers and contest ballots will be available October 10 at McLean Community Centre, Audley Recreation Centre and Ajax Community Centre.
Recreation customer-service staff will wear purple on October 10 and 11 to raise awareness of the campaign.
The town’s broader Elevate Girls program focuses on creating pathways into sport for girls and women through programming, staff training, marketing and promotion.
Mayor Shaun Collier said the initiative celebrates achievement while recognizing that barriers remain. Recreation and culture director Chris Vida said sport can help build confidence, skills and connections.
The Ajax Elevate Girls campaign is a current week-long initiative, with full details available through the town.
