Two women’s lacrosse games in Oshawa ended in losses for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, but the team’s offence produced a strong second-half response in the afternoon contest.
Toronto fell 12-8 to the Western Mustangs before losing 17-14 to the Brock Badgers on September 19. The two games were part of a busy Ontario university lacrosse day in Oshawa.
Toronto challenges Western before late Mustangs finish
The opening game remained competitive after Western built an early two-goal advantage. Toronto fought back and used a four-goal third quarter to take its first lead, according to the Varsity Blues’ official recap.
Western answered with a strong finish to secure the 12-8 result. Fifth-year attacker Rheanna Swanson and first-year midfielder Cassie Chan led Toronto with three goals apiece. Brynn Williams and Julia Ibelings each added one goal, while Jasleen Sandhu recorded an assist. First-year goalie Elizabeth Wu started for the Blues.
Olivia Bladon paced Western with four goals and one assist, while Reese Wilkins scored three times. Shelia Raminpour started in goal for the Mustangs.
Second-half surge narrows deficit against Brock
The afternoon game developed into a higher-scoring contest. Brock carried a 13-4 lead into halftime, but Toronto outscored the Badgers 10-4 after the break. The comeback reduced the final margin to three goals, although Brock held on for the 17-14 win.
Swanson scored eight goals and added an assist against Brock, giving her 11 goals across the two Oshawa games. Chan recorded her second hat trick of the day. Sandhu, Williams and Erin Middleton also scored, and Skye MacLean contributed two assists.
For Brock, Gabby Winters registered three goals and two assists. Abby Holliday led the Badgers in goals with four.
The results left Toronto without a win from the Oshawa doubleheader, but its 10-goal second half against Brock showed the offence’s ability to respond after a difficult opening half. The official recap did not identify the Oshawa venue or publish attendance figures.
Toronto is scheduled to return to action against the Trent Excalibur in Kingston on Saturday, September 26. The game is set to begin at 1:45 p.m.
