Durham health funding totalling about $22.5 million is being directed to three local health organizations to support hospital operations, shorten waits and pay for repairs and facility upgrades.

Funding figures released through Durham MPP Todd McCarthy’s office show Lakeridge Health, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences and Durham Community Health Centre will receive support through a combination of operating and infrastructure programs.

The largest share is connected to Lakeridge Health, the regional hospital system serving communities across Durham. The organization is listed to receive $19,097,571. Ontario Shores, the specialized mental health hospital in Whitby, is allocated $3,203,300, while Durham Community Health Centre is listed for $217,279.

Where the Durham health funding will go

According to the funding breakdown, approximately $19.58 million is intended to support hospital operations at Lakeridge Health and Ontario Shores. That money is meant to help the organizations manage day-to-day pressures while maintaining access to care.

For Lakeridge Health, the support is expected to help keep emergency services operating and address inflation and wage pressures. It is also intended to reduce waits for diagnostic imaging and surgical procedures, including MRI and CT scans, cardiac and stroke services, neuroservices, orthopaedics and cataract care.

A further $2.64 million is being provided to Lakeridge Health through Ontario’s Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund. That program supports repairs and upgrades needed to keep hospital buildings safe and reliable for patients, families and staff.

Another $296,602 is earmarked through the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund for work at Durham Community Health Centre and Lakeridge Health. Eligible projects can include urgent repairs to roofs and windows as well as upgrades to security systems, fire alarms and emergency generators.

Regional impact

The investment touches several parts of Durham’s health-care system: acute and emergency hospital care through Lakeridge Health, specialized mental health treatment through Ontario Shores, and community-based care through Durham Community Health Centre.

For residents, the immediate significance is operational stability and maintenance rather than the construction of a new hospital. The funding is intended to support existing services and facilities while Durham’s population continues to grow and demand for emergency, diagnostic, surgical and mental health care increases.

The province has said it plans to invest approximately $64 billion in major health infrastructure across Ontario over the next decade, including more than 50 major hospital projects and about 3,000 additional beds. The Durham allocation is separate from longer-term local redevelopment proposals and will be distributed through current operating and renewal programs.

Lakeridge Health operates hospital sites in Ajax and Pickering, Bowmanville, Oshawa, Port Perry and Whitby, so operating and repair funding can affect services used throughout the region. Ontario Shores provides specialized assessment and treatment for people living with complex and serious mental illness, while Durham Community Health Centre delivers primary care and community programs.

No individual construction projects or new service start dates were included in the local announcement. The organizations will determine how their allocations are applied within the eligible operating and renewal priorities identified by the province.
