Clarington’s largest recreation project is nearing its first opening phase, with new programs at the South Bowmanville Recreation Centre expected to begin later in 2026.
The South Bowmanville rec centre at 2375 Baseline Road is being built on the former Bowmanville Indoor Soccer Centre property. Fall program information will become available on August 12, while registration for residents begins September 2. An exact grand-opening date has not yet been announced.
Construction began with an official groundbreaking ceremony on May 1, 2025.
South Bowmanville Rec Centre Phase 1 Features
Phase 1 will introduce a FIFA-sized multi-sport dome with a three-lane indoor walking track.
Clarington says the dome will be four times larger than the former Bowmanville Indoor Soccer Centre and will support soccer and other field sports throughout the year.
The facility will also include two fully accessible, FIBA-sized courts. They can be configured for basketball, pickleball, tennis, volleyball and other indoor sports.
Additional Phase 1 amenities include:
- Multi-purpose fitness and recreation rooms
- A quiet room for sensory breaks, prayer or reflection
- Accessible and private change areas
- Expanded parking and landscaping
- A new road and intersection serving the facility
- Continued use of the existing outdoor lacrosse bowl
The Municipality says the new gym will be twice the size of the gym at the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex.
Durham’s First Refrigerated Skating Trail
One of the centre’s most distinctive features will be Durham Region’s first outdoor refrigerated skating trail.
The modified figure-eight trail will measure approximately 170 metres and cover more than 850 square metres. During warmer months, the space can be used for public markets, community activities and other outdoor events.
The skating trail, sports dome, courts and multi-purpose rooms are all part of the first phase expected to open later this year.
Residents will be able to register for new programs at the facility when Clarington’s fall recreation registration begins September 2 at 7 a.m. Non-resident registration normally opens one week later.
Aquatic Centre Planned for Phase 2
Phase 2 will add an indoor aquatic centre containing a six-lane, 25-metre lap pool and Clarington’s first warm-water therapeutic pool.
The aquatic area is being designed for lane swimming, public swimming, lessons, aquafit classes and aquatic leadership training. It will also include viewing areas, additional multi-purpose rooms and accessible, universal and gender-specific change facilities.
An outdoor splash pad and playground are also included in Phase 2.
Clarington’s current project timeline says Phase 2 construction will begin in 2026. The Municipality has not yet published a confirmed opening date for the pools.
Project Budget Reaches Nearly $122 Million
Clarington Council had previously approved a total project budget of $105.245 million.
A September 2025 staff report requested an additional $16.56 million because of updated aquatic-centre construction estimates and the need for a larger contingency fund. The increase brought the revised total project budget to $121.805 million.
The Ontario government subsequently announced a $10-million contribution through the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund. Clarington said the provincial funding would help reduce pressure on the local property-tax base.
Separate Sports Grounds Planned Nearby
Clarington has also acquired 20 hectares at 801 Maple Grove Road, immediately west of the recreation centre, for a future outdoor Sports and Event Grounds.
Preliminary concepts include a dedicated cricket field, soccer fields, a sanctioned toboggan hill, connected trails, a covered performance stage and a 3.5-hectare gathering space for major events. Public consultation is expected in fall 2026, and the concepts remain subject to planning and community feedback.
The South Bowmanville rec centre will open in stages, with fall programming, the multi-sport dome, courts and skating trail expected first. Residents should monitor Clarington’s official project page for the confirmed opening date and final program schedule.
