A man wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of a security guard at Pickering Casino Resort has been arrested in Saskatoon nearly three years after the homicide.

The Pickering casino arrest was carried out shortly after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, following a coordinated investigation involving Durham Regional Police and the Saskatoon Police Service.

Saskatoon police said officers from the Criminal Intelligence and Street Crime sections arrested a 20-year-old man at an unrelated business in the 3000 block of Meadows Parkway. He was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder in connection with a 2023 Durham Region homicide.

Loaded Handgun Allegedly Found During Arrest

Police said a loaded handgun was found and seized during a search of the accused following his arrest.

Arrangements are being made to return him to Durham Region, where he is expected to face the outstanding murder charge. Police have not publicly provided a date for his transfer or his first Ontario court appearance.

The charge is an allegation that has not been proven in court. The accused is presumed innocent unless found guilty through the judicial process.

Because the accused was 17 at the time of the alleged offence, news organizations should avoid publishing his identity or other identifying information unless they have confirmed that a valid court authorization permits publication.

Security Guard Killed at Pickering Casino

The case relates to the death of Michael Ferdinand, a 34-year-old security guard who was working at Pickering Casino Resort on October 9, 2023.

Durham police were called to the casino at approximately 5:05 a.m. following reports of an armed person. Officers found Ferdinand inside the building suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre but later died from his injuries.

Police previously said a group had been denied entry to the casino before returning to the property. Investigators alleged that shots were fired into the building, striking Ferdinand while he was performing his security duties.

No court has yet determined the circumstances of the shooting or the accused’s responsibility.

Police Search Continued for Nearly Three Years

A Canada-wide warrant was issued after investigators identified a suspect who was 17 at the time of the shooting.

Durham police renewed public appeals several times as the investigation continued. In December 2025, Durham Regional Crime Stoppers offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Police said Ferdinand remained deeply missed by his family and community and repeatedly urged anyone with information to contact investigators.

The Pickering casino arrest represents the most significant publicly announced development in the case since the warrant and reward were issued.

Investigation Remains Active

Durham Regional Police said they are working with out-of-province law-enforcement partners to return the accused to the appropriate jurisdiction.

Police have not confirmed whether additional suspects remain under investigation, whether the firearm allegedly found in Saskatoon is connected to the Pickering homicide or whether further charges are expected.

The presence of a loaded handgun during the arrest was reported by Saskatoon police, but no conclusion has been announced connecting that weapon to the 2023 shooting.

Further information is expected once the accused is transported to Ontario and appears in court.

This article should be updated when Durham police release confirmed information about the transfer, court proceedings, additional charges or the continuing status of the homicide investigation.
