A youth-led initiative aiming to topple a Guinness World Record while fighting hunger in Durham Region will be one of the featured attractions at this year’s Bowmanville Ribfest and Canada Day celebration.

The Knock Down Hunger Challenge invites schools, businesses, churches, community organizations, and residents across Durham to collect enough boxes of macaroni and cheese to surpass the current Guinness World Record of 11,936 packaged food boxes toppled in a domino fashion. Every box collected will be donated to Feed the Need in Durham after the event.

Organized by Nancy LeBlanc, the campaign will culminate on Canada Day at the Garnet B. Rickard Complex in Bowmanville, where thousands of boxes will be carefully arranged into a massive domino chain and toppled in a single continuous sequence. The event runs in conjunction with Clarington’s Canada Day Celebration and the Bowmanville Rotary Club’s annual Ribfest, which takes place June 12 through 14.

“What makes this challenge special is that every box represents a meal that will help a family in our community,” said LeBlanc. “We’re not simply chasing a world record. We’re creating a movement led by young people who want to make a difference. Our main reason for doing this is to make sure no child goes hungry over the summer months when school food programs are not available.”

The campaign is powered largely by children and teenagers who are organizing fundraising initiatives, hosting pop-up food drives, recruiting community champions, promoting the event, and assisting with the construction of the massive domino chain. After the event, the young volunteers will help pack up the donations for delivery to Feed the Need in Durham.

One of the most visually striking elements of the campaign will be the Community Champions Banner, an eight-by-eight-foot mural-style display created by local children and youth. The banner will recognize every school, business, church, community organization, and neighbourhood group that contributed donations or supported the challenge.

The grand finale of the event will feature the dramatic collapse of the Wall of Hunger, a towering structure built entirely from the donated boxes of macaroni and cheese. When the final domino strikes the wall, it will topple to the ground in a powerful visual symbol of what can happen when communities unite to fight hunger.

Organizers are encouraging Durham Region residents to get involved by donating boxes of macaroni and cheese or by volunteering their time during the Ribfest weekend setup. Collection points will be available at the Garnet B. Rickard Complex throughout the three-day festival.

Feed the Need in Durham is the region’s largest food distribution organization, providing food to emergency food programs including food banks, meal programs, and shelters across Durham. The Knock Down Hunger Challenge represents a creative and engaging way to support their work at a critical time of year.

The Bowmanville Ribfest runs June 12 through 14 at the Garnet B. Rickard Complex, with the Knock Down Hunger domino challenge taking place during the Canada Day celebrations on July 1. Admission to both events is open to the public.

Durham Region residents looking to contribute can follow the Knock Down Hunger Challenge on social media for updates on collection drives and volunteer opportunities leading up to the Canada Day event.
