A Pickering shops sex offender is now in custody after Durham residents helped police identify and locate the suspect involved in a series of incidents at a local shopping centre. Durham Regional Police say the arrest was made possible through public assistance following a community alert.

The incidents involving the Pickering shops sex offender began on March 26, 2026, at a clothing store inside The Shops at Pickering City Centre, located at 1355 Kingston Road. Police report that the suspect entered a changeroom area and exposed himself to customers and staff. While the incident caused concern, no physical injuries were reported at that time.

The situation escalated on April 2, when the Pickering shops sex offender returned to the same location. During this second visit, police say the suspect sexually assaulted an employee before fleeing the scene prior to officers arriving. The victim did not suffer physical injuries, but the incident triggered a full investigation by the Special Victims Unit.

In an effort to identify the suspect, Durham Regional Police shared details through their “Help Solve a Crime” initiative, which encourages public involvement in ongoing investigations. The community response played a key role, as residents provided information that helped investigators identify the individual.

On April 25, police located and arrested the Pickering shops sex offender without incident. The suspect, a 29-year-old man with no fixed address, was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing. Due to legal considerations, further identifying details have not been released.

Police have expressed concern that there may be additional victims connected to the case. As a result, investigators are continuing their efforts and are urging anyone who may have had contact with the suspect or witnessed suspicious behaviour to come forward.

The case highlights the importance of community cooperation in addressing public safety concerns. The successful arrest of the Pickering shops sex offender demonstrates how information shared by residents can assist law enforcement in resolving serious incidents more quickly.

Durham Regional Police are asking anyone with further information to contact the Special Victims Unit. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers.

Authorities continue to emphasize vigilance in public spaces and encourage individuals to report any concerning behaviour. The investigation remains ongoing as police work to determine whether additional incidents may be linked to the suspect.
