Residents and visitors are invited to explore the rich history of Ajax through a special Jane’s Walk Ajax event taking place on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Heritage Square, Town Hall (65 Harwood Avenue South, Ajax). This free community event offers a unique opportunity to learn about the town’s origins while enjoying a guided outdoor experience.
The DIL History Jane’s Walk Ajax will focus on the legacy of Defence Industries Limited (DIL), a major wartime operation that played a crucial role in shaping the town. Operating between 1941 and 1945, DIL was once the largest munitions plant in the British Empire. It employed more than 9,000 workers and produced over 51 million shells during its years of operation. The plant’s presence not only supported the war effort but also laid the foundation for the development of Ajax as a community.
Participants in the Jane’s Walk Ajax will follow a 13-stop walking route, with each stop highlighting a different aspect of the DIL site and its historical significance. The guided tour will provide insights into the daily operations of the plant, the lives of the workers, and how the area transformed after the war. This makes the walk both educational and engaging for attendees of all ages.
To enhance the experience, participants are encouraged to bring a mobile phone or device. By visiting ajax.ca/DILtour, attendees can access historic photos at each stop, allowing them to compare past and present views of the locations. This interactive element adds depth to the Jane’s Walk Ajax, helping bring history to life in a meaningful way.
The event is part of the global Jane’s Walk movement, which encourages people to connect with their communities through storytelling and shared local experiences. The Jane’s Walk Ajax reflects this goal by offering a chance to learn about the town’s history while walking through its streets and public spaces.
No registration is required for the event, making it accessible to everyone. Residents, families, and history enthusiasts are all welcome to join and discover more about Ajax’s past. The short duration and easy walking route make it suitable for a wide range of participants.
The Jane’s Walk Ajax highlights the importance of preserving local history and understanding how communities evolve over time. By revisiting the story of DIL, participants can gain a deeper appreciation for Ajax’s heritage and the role it played during a significant period in history.
