A Whitby Youth Armed Robbery has resulted in criminal charges against two 14 year old boys after a teenager was threatened with a conducted energy weapon and robbed in the town’s north end.
Durham Regional Police responded to reports of a robbery at Taunton Road and Garden Street on February 19. According to investigators, two male youths approached another teenager and allegedly threatened him with what was later confirmed to be a conducted energy weapon, commonly known as a taser.
Police say the suspects demanded the victim’s jacket and satchel during the confrontation.
Following the incident, officers were able to identify both suspects and take them into custody a short time later.
Authorities confirmed that the weapon involved in the Whitby Youth Armed Robbery was a taser. No physical injuries were reported by the victim.
A 14 year old boy from Whitby has been charged with robbery. The second 14 year old, also from Whitby, faces multiple charges including robbery, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and disguise with intent.
Both accused youths were released on promises to appear in court at a later date.
Police have not released the identities of the accused due to provisions under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances surrounding the Whitby Youth Armed Robbery and are appealing to the public for assistance.
