A Whitby Uber Driver Gun Threat Arrest has led to several additional charges against a teenager already under a weapons prohibition in Durham Region.
Durham Regional Police say a 17 year old from Oshawa is facing numerous new criminal charges after allegedly threatening an Uber driver with a firearm and forcing the driver to flee from police during a traffic stop in Whitby.
The Whitby Uber Driver Gun Threat Arrest occurred shortly after midnight near Brock Street and Chestnut Street, just north of downtown Whitby.
Police say officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area.
According to investigators, the driver slowed down but continued driving at a slow speed before eventually bringing the vehicle to a stop.
At that moment, the suspect reportedly opened the rear passenger door and attempted to escape on foot.
Officers immediately began a short foot pursuit and were able to take the suspect into custody a short distance away.
During the investigation, police discovered that the suspect had allegedly pointed a firearm at the Uber driver during the incident.
Investigators say the teen ordered the driver to flee police while holding the weapon, creating a dangerous situation for both the driver and officers involved.
Following the Whitby Uber Driver Gun Threat Arrest, police located a firearm along with drugs and drug paraphernalia believed to belong to the suspect.
Authorities later confirmed the teen was already under a firearm and weapons prohibition order at the time of the incident.
Police also determined the accused was under conditional supervision for previous violent offences when the new incident occurred.
As a result, the teenager now faces eight weapons related charges along with several other criminal counts.
Additional charges include uttering threats, disguise with intent, cocaine trafficking and crack cocaine trafficking.
Police also laid three charges for failing to comply with Youth Criminal Justice Act sentencing conditions.
Investigators say the Whitby Uber Driver Gun Threat Arrest highlights the serious risks faced by drivers who operate ride share services.
The accused was held in custody and scheduled to appear for a bail hearing.
Durham Regional Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
Officers are asking anyone who may have witnessed the event or has cell phone, dashcam or surveillance footage to come forward.
