Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a freezing rain warning for much of southern Ontario, including Durham Region, with ice accumulation of up to five millimetres possible on Tuesday, January 6.
According to the warning, areas including Toronto, Mississauga, Durham Region and east toward Belleville could receive up to five millimetres of ice accretion. Lower amounts—up to three millimetres—are expected in Brampton, Halton Region, Hamilton and west toward London.
Freezing rain is forecast to begin near midday and continue into the early evening. Precipitation may start earlier in the day as patchy freezing drizzle before transitioning to freezing rain. At times, the freezing rain may be mixed with snow or ice pellets.
As a low-pressure system moves through the region, conditions are expected to change over to rain or snow later in the day. Areas close to the Lake Ontario shoreline may see minimal ice buildup.
Environment Canada warns that roads and walkways are likely to become icy and slippery, with hazardous conditions that may be difficult to detect. Localized power outages are also possible, and there is an increased risk of injury due to slips and falls.
Residents are urged to take precautions when travelling and to monitor local weather updates throughout the day.
