Parts of southern Ontario are bracing for significant snowfall and blizzard-like conditions, as Environment Canada issues multiple snow squall warnings and watches across the region.

Heavy Snow and Blizzard Warnings

Environment Canada has placed orange-level weather alerts for areas east of Lake Huron, where 20 to 50 centimetres of snow is expected.

The hardest-hit areas include:

  • Huron County
  • Saugeen Shores
  • Kincardine

These locations could receive between 25 and 50 cm of snow, accompanied by strong winds and blowing snow.

“A brief but intense snow squall is expected this morning along a cold front,” Environment Canada said. “A quick five centimetres of snow and a rapid temperature drop will create icy surfaces.”

Dangerous Wind and Visibility Conditions

Lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Huron are forecast to intensify throughout the day, with northwesterly wind gusts between 70 and 90 km/h.

Blowing snow and near-zero visibility may result in whiteout conditions, particularly in open areas and along highways.

Snowfall Forecast by Region

Additional snowfall projections include:

  • Barrie area: 25 to 45 cm
  • London area: 20 to 40 cm

Parts of the Greater Toronto Area are also under alerts:

  • Northern York and Durham regions: 15 to 25 cm (yellow warning)
  • Halton Region (including Milton): Quick 5 cm possible
  • Kitchener area: 10 to 20 cm possible

Travel Risks and Power Outages

Environment Canada warns that travel conditions may become extremely hazardous, with risks including:

  • Highway and road closures
  • Poor visibility
  • Utility outages in heavily affected areas

Residents are advised to avoid non-essential travel and monitor local weather updates closely.

Snow squalls are expected to gradually ease by Tuesday afternoon.
