Two separate incidents involving detached vehicle wheels were reported on Highway 401 in Pickering on Thursday, with one driver taken to hospital after their vehicle was struck.
Shortly before 1 p.m., a wheel detached from a tractor trailer and struck a white sedan travelling in the westbound lanes near Brock Road. The impact severely damaged the vehicle, and the sedan’s driver was transported to hospital with injuries.
Police said the incident occurred at approximately 12:35 p.m. when a wheel came off a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) trailer travelling eastbound. The driver of the CMV was charged with operating a vehicle with a major defect, failing to record the defect during a daily inspection, operating an unsecured load, and using a defective or damaged tie-down.
Earlier that morning, a separate flying wheel incident occurred in the eastbound lanes near Liverpool Road, when a driver-side dual wheel detached from a tow truck. No injuries or collisions were reported in that case.
However, the tow truck driver was charged with driving while a CMV part was detached, operating with a major defect, and failing to accurately complete a daily inspection report.
Police continue to remind commercial vehicle operators of the importance of proper inspections and maintenance to ensure road safety.
