The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is undertaking a major shoreline restoration project along the Ajax waterfront to combat erosion and return the shoreline to a more natural state.
Crews are installing large cobbles and boulders along roughly one kilometre of Ajax Waterfront Park, following recommendations from a 2024 environmental assessment. The work is focused near the Love Crescent parking lot, with trail detours in place for public safety.
The project uses a nature-based “cobble and boulder shoreline” design that allows wave action to naturally shape the beach over time, mimicking shoreline conditions from the late 1800s. Stones are placed underwater and along the water’s edge to provide erosion protection while maintaining a natural appearance.
Work will be completed in two stages, extending west toward Lion’s Point and east toward Veteran’s Point Gardens. Construction is expected to continue through 2026, subject to funding availability.
The TRCA says the project will improve shoreline resilience, reduce safety risks, and help protect the waterfront from increasingly severe storm conditions.
