Ontario Provincial Police are investigating an early morning three-car collision on Highway 7 at Island Road just outside Port Perry that sent two drivers to hospital on Wednesday.

The crash happened shortly before 7 a.m. when three vehicles collided on the busy stretch of Highway 7 near Scugog Island in the Municipality of Scugog. OPP officers, along with emergency medical services and fire personnel, responded quickly to the scene to find two drivers suffering from injuries sustained in the collision.

The crash forced the temporary closure of Highway 7 in the area, causing significant delays for morning commuters travelling through the northern Durham Region corridor. The highway has since reopened to traffic as investigators finished clearing the scene and gathering evidence.

OPP are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the three-vehicle collision. It remains unclear at this time what specific factors may have contributed to the crash, including whether weather conditions, road surface conditions, vehicle speed, or driver distraction played a role in the incident.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dash cam footage of the incident to contact the Ontario Provincial Police directly. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca.

Highway 7 is a major east-west route running through the northern part of Durham Region, connecting communities such as Port Perry, Oshawa, and points further east toward Peterborough and the Kawarthas. The stretch near Island Road passes through a mix of rural and semi-developed areas where speed limits and road conditions can change quickly, requiring extra attention from drivers familiar and unfamiliar with the route alike.

Motorists travelling through the area are reminded to exercise caution, reduce speed in changing road conditions, and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles. OPP continue to emphasize the importance of attentive driving, particularly during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced and wildlife activity tends to be higher along rural sections of the highway.

This collision comes during a week that has already seen multiple serious motor vehicle incidents across Durham Region, including two separate motorcycle collisions in Oshawa and Whitby that left two riders with life-altering injuries.

The Wednesday morning Port Perry crash serves as another stark reminder of the importance of safe driving habits on Durham Region roads. With summer fast approaching and traffic volumes expected to increase significantly across the region, police are urging all motorists to stay focused behind the wheel, obey posted speed limits, and avoid all distractions while driving.

Anyone with additional information about this collision is encouraged to contact the OPP communications centre or reach out to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers with anonymous tips.
