St. Joseph Catholic School in Oshawa is celebrating a significant achievement as its Junior Band has been named one of the top 10 finalists in the CBC Music Class Competition this year. The competition is a nationwide student music event that recognizes exceptional student musicians across Canada.
The band performed “Je te laisserai des mots,” a piece by Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson, in the style of NPR’s renowned Tiny Desk Concerts. Their creative submission showcased their dedication and passion for music, all while performing in French and adopting the unique format of the Tiny Desk Concerts series.
Steven Parker, the teacher who leads the band, expressed immense pride in the students’ accomplishment. “Performing in French and creating a Tiny Desk-style video was a unique challenge, and their commitment really paid off,” said Parker. “This achievement is a testament to their creativity, teamwork, and love for the arts.”
While the St. Joseph band did not win a top prize, they earned a prestigious top 10 position in the junior/intermediate contemporary ensemble category (Grades 4-9).
